There are so many, so how do you choose which one works for you?
Congratulations on making the decision to adopt a dog. The next step is to decide what breed you want to get. Do your research on any breeds that you have interest in to truly understand their temperament and traits. Make sure you are Choosing the Right Breed for you.
Some questions to consider when Choosing the Right Breed
What size dog do I want to get?
If you get a mixed breed from a rescue or shelter, I would recommend doing a DNA test to best understand your dog and their behaviors.
Exercising & Energy Levels
Their energy level is based on their age and genetic makeup majority of the time. For example, Boxers are high energy but basset hounds are more on the chill side. All dogs need some form of Exercise. Vets typically recommend around 2 hours total a day of exercise, this is both mental and physical.
Crate train my dog?
Many adopted dogs prefer a crate as it is considered their safe space to truly relax. As a trainer I recommend to always crate train your dog no matter the breed or temperament. The benefits are for safety in emergencies and if they go to the Vet, Groomer or boarding. It will cause them less stress in the long-haul.
Consider other Pets & Children
Consider your other dogs when you want another dog. Do not get a dog for your dog to have a companion the dog should be for you. If your dog has behavior issues holding off may be best.
Children should be considered when looking for a new dog. Make sure your dog has been temperament tested around children. Also make sure your children are old enough to respect their boundaries.
Training
Puppy Classes, obedience school, and doggy daycare for socialization and basic commands. I highly recommend starting your dogs journey with group classes and then continue on your own or with a private trainer. Daycare is great for dogs to learn to be social and make friends, as well as have a have a place to board if needed.
