The Keto Diet and Dogs

Good Afternoon Dog lovers,

Today we talk about the Keto diet and how to feed it to your dogs if you wish. Most pet owners including myself feed their dog dry dog food. Some people may prefer that and others for dietary reasons or personal they want their dogs eat cleaner foods.

I am not a veterinarian or an animal nutritionist.  Please do not use this blog post to diagnose or treat your dog. This blog is for informational purposes only. If you have a health concern or question about your dog please seek the advice of a licensed veterinarian

This diet has been known to help cure or slow down cancer in dogs and although I have not heard of any official research claims it may help with preventing cancer as well.

What is the Keto Diet for Dogs?

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process when the body does not produce enough carbohydrates from food to burn for energy the body will burn fat instead making ketones.

The idea of the Keto diet for dogs is to improve the diets of their ancestors which not only includes proteins (80/10/5/5) but also has periods of fasting that naturally place the dog into ketosis.

It is made of up high fat, moderate protein and low carbs.

Benefits of Keto Diet for Dogs

  • Seizures
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Prevent or Starve Cancer

Misconceptions of Keto Diet for Dogs

  • A raw diet does not become a keto diet simply by adding more fat. if we add fat without decreasing protein and carbs, then our dogs will gain weight and we will be feeding existing cancer cells.
  • Different levels of diet: the rations range from dogs that have been diagnosed with cancer or other serious issues to more of a maintaince level
  • Not enough to add fat to a dogs diet and we need to test to make sure our dogs are actually in ketosis and gain better understanding of our dogs cycle.

How to get Started on the Keto Diet

It’s important to understand the ratios of a ketogenic diet:

4:1 is four parts fat to one part protein+carbs
3:1 is three parts fat to one part protein+carbs
2:1 is two parts fat to one part protein+carbs
1:1 is one part fat to one part protein+carbs
0.5:1 is 1/2 part fat to one part protein+carbs

As I understand it, the 4:1 ratio is for a dog diagnosed with cancer or another serious illness that a keto diet may help alleviate. A 1/2:1 ratio is more of a maintenance level; you’ve got the dog’s health conditions under control and now you are taking the dog in and out of keto for short periods of time.
