How to safely slow down your dog’s eating

Hey Dog Lovers,

After working with dogs for many years and adopting Aussie I have found a new appreciation for brain work in dogs. In today’s post I talk about fast eaters and how to slow them down enough to actually enjoy their meals. In a later post I will be talking about Interactive dog toys and how to keep a bored dog entertained.

Eating food slowly and chewing it before swallowing it is better for our dog’s heath. Using an interactive feeder or toy, compared to a standard bowl may be a perfect solution.

Dogs who are predisposed to “Bloat” or otherwise known as Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus or GDV) need to eat slowly to prevent Bloat, a condition that can be rapidly fatal. Recognition and action is crucial should it even happen to your dog.

For high energy dogs, interactive toys and puzzle feeders can help not only slow down their feeding but can also stimulate them mentally, leading to a happier and more exhausted dog.

Interactive toys and Puzzle Feeders:

  • Kong Wobbler (Do not use with wet food)
  • Green Feeder , sturdy and dishwasher safe. Can be used for wet food and dry food.
  • Maze Bowl – fun way to watch your dogs brain engage
  • Toppl System – durable, dishwasher safe, latex free

The important thing to remember is that you can never start too soon or too late. It helps when they are puppies so they can get some of their puppy energy out. Great to exercise the mind of older dogs as well.

Make sure to check back weekly for: Training Tuesdays and Thursday Thoughts!
