Hey Dog Lovers,
Today I talk about a common problem many young people have when they get their first dog, living in an apartment and potty training. This is an entirely new game as you can’t simply pick up your puppy and run out the back door into the yard. You now have stairs or even an elevator in the way.
Get into a Regular Routine – feed your dog at scheduled intervals and take potty breaks at the same time each day so your dog can start to develop habits and expectations. The younger the puppy the more potty breaks they will need.
Offer praise and / or rewards for desired behaviors – whether they respond to verbal praise, a favorite toy or a special treat, be sure to lavish him with a positive stimulus everytime they go successful outside.
Watch for signs that your dog has to go- go to the door, whine, sniffing, circling , etc.
Have a backup plan- Pee pads, dog litter box
Carry young puppies- they are less likely to pee on you if they are in the air
Tips:
- Accidents happen- do not punish , this can undermine your whole relationship with your dog
- Crate Training- dogs don’t soil their sleeping area
- Long-Term Confinement Area
- Umbilical Cord Leash
- Potty Bell
With plenty of patience and practice your new dog will learn the appropriate places to go potty, even if it means patiently waiting for the elevator to reach the ground floor.
