Hey Dog Lovers,
Today we talk about which bones are the safest for your dogs and which ones are not as good.
There are dangers, regardless if they are raw or cooked, big or small.
There are those rare occasions where dogs who chew bones/eat bones are okay with any incident, I am not saying that every dog who eats a bone will not be ok but it can happen and the more knowledge you have on it the better.
Kinds of Problems Vets see from Chewing/Eating Bones:
- Broken teeth
- Painful for dogs and predisposed to tooth infection.
- Requires anesthesia and surgery to fix or remove tooth
- Obstructed airway
- Distressing to dog and owner as long as the dog has difficulty breathing
- Requires quick action to remove lodged bone
- Warning: dogs may bite whomever is in their mouth on accident
- Digestive irritation
- Leads to pain and inflammation of the lining of the stomach and or intestines
- Results in a refusal to eat, vomiting or diarrhea
- Digestive obstruction
- Blockage of the stomach and or intestinal tract resulting in vomiting, abdominal pain, electrolyte imbalances and dehydration
- Sepsis can happen
- Anesthesia and endoscopy and or surgery is typically required to remove an obstruction
- Digestive tract perforation
- Sharp points on broken bones can poke through the wall of the stomach and or intestines as they pass through resulting in spillage of gut contents into the abdominal Cavity
