Itchy dog?- try fish oils

Hey Dog Lovers,

Today I talk about Fish Oil, something I have used on my own dogs since I can remember. I will discuss the uses of fish oil and benefits.

Itchiness is a very common complaint and problem in dogs, causes include bacterial or fungal skin infections, food hypersensitivity, environmental allergies and fleas.

Each cause has its own specific treatments and preventative steps but there is one product that could potentially improve your dog’s skin and help decrease your dog’s level of itchiness. The answer is Fish Oil.

Fish oils are not some magical elixir and the cure to all your dogs ills. But it can be a helpful addition to itchy skin treatment and prevention.

Omega-36 fatty acids, specifically Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), present in fish oils can help to decrease inflammation in skin cells. Less inflammation can translate to less itchiness.

Fish Oil usage in other conditions:

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Arthritis and degenerative joint disease
  • Certain heart conditions
  • Cognitive dysfunction (old age)
  • And possibly certain others

Potential Problems with the use of Fish Oils:

  • Prolonged bleeding times
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Certain breeds (schnauzers and yorkshire terriers) both predisposed to pancreatitis
  • Always speak to your vet if fish oils is ok to use on your dog

Do not use a fish oil that has Vitamin D added in as it can be toxic for your pets. The same goes with anything with Xylitol
