Cloudy eyes- not always cataracts

Hey Dog Lovers,

Today I will talk about the many things Cloudy Eyes could be in dogs. Many dog owners believe that cloudy eyes is automatically cataracts but the truth is that is not always the case. The more common cause of cloudy eyes is Lenticular (Nuclear) Sclerosis.

Difference between cataracts and lenticular sclerosis Lenticular sclerosis

  • Cloudiness of the lens of the eyes resulting from a normal age change.
  • Older components of the lens get compressed within the center of the lens as newer components are formed at the perimeter of the lens which is a natural process.
  • Compression leads to a hardening of the lens which affects its ability to bend and allow light through in that particular portion of the lens
  • Tends to affect both eyes equally and does not affect vision typically
  • In advanced cases deterioration in depth perception, but does not cause blindness.
  • Cataracts –
    • Cloudiness of the lens of the eyes resulting from a significant change in the structure and integrity of the proteins and other components that make up the lens
    • Results in Opacification which prevents light from getting through the retina where vision is triggered
    • Various levels of blindness can result from cataracts, depending on the stage of development of cataracts and how much the lens is affected
    • Results from many different causes and can form in one or both eyes
