5 Everyday Habits that help keep your Dog Fit

Hey Dog Lovers,

Today we talk about 5 Everyday Habits that Help Keep your dog fit. Preventing our dogs from becoming unfit is always a difficult task. Overeating is the #1 reason for dog obesity. Dogs get hungry quicker when they have a high play drive. Do not worry, feed on a schedule and your dog will adapt.

Ensure that Your Pooch gets enough exercise daily. Recommended 30 minutes daily is ideal. More is encouraged but not needed. Jogging or Running is also a great alternative and if it’s raining you can always train them to use the treadmill.

Watch the Everyday Calorie Requirements. Deciding on the right amount of calories that your dog should take is a difficult task. Trust the SlimDoggy Iphone App, which will simplify the task for you. The right amount of calories varies depending on level of activity, size, weight and age. A very active dog needs to be fed more than a lazier dog.

Watch out for Treats. If your dog likes veggies, then you are one of the lucky ones, use those as much as you can. Be aware dogs do get bored of treats so rotate them in and out with other healthy alternatives.  Veggies and Fruits have very low amounts of calorie levels. With Puppies you can use their food for training if you are very concerned. I recommend Zukes. They are 3 calories per one treat and they are small. Cost effective and most dogs like them, they come in many flavors.

For a Dog who is Already Overweight, Feed them less. I had this problem with Aussie as when she lived with my parents they spoiled her with lots of human food and not so much exercise, resulting in her being a little over 5 pounds overweight. When we moved to CT we cut down on her dog food and eliminated human food. She was able to lose the weight and is healthy now. It took an adjustment on her part but she managed.

Measure the Quality of Food Your Dog gets. Check on your dog’s weight, make sure that you measure the amount of food that it feeds on daily. Using a scale or measuring up will serve you a great deal when it comes to this.
