Ever have a snack and you look over and see your dog inches from you staring into the food. Hoping it would magically land in their mouths. Ever thought I wonder if my snack is safe for other dogs so I can share it. I have had these same thoughts.
Today we talk about what is poisonous to dogs and what is not. (If foods you are curious about are not mentioned, make sure to ask your vet )
Toxic for Dogs:
Alcohol
Vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, depression of central nervous system, breathing issues, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma and even death
Apple Seeds
Contains cyanide – Buy pre cut apple slices vs buying a whole apple and slicing them.
Apricot stems, leaves and Pits
Contains cyanide – Buy pre cut Apricots if you want to give them to your dog
Caffeine
Contains methylxanthine
Vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death
Gum and Candy
Contains Xylitol
Insulin release leading to liver failure
Fruit Pits
Contain Cyanide
Dilated Pupils, difficulty breathing, panting, shock and even death
Garlic, onions, onion powder and chives
Contains N-propyl disulfide
Vomiting, breakdown of red blood cells, blood in urine, weakness, high heart rate and panting
Grapes and Raisins
Kidney failure
Hops (Beer)
Panting, high body temperature, seizures and death
Nuts
Oils and Fats
Vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, weakness, depression, tremors and hyperthermia
Milk and Diary
Diarrhea – Dogs do not have enough lactase (enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk) to process dairy products
Mushroom Plants
1% are highly toxic and are life threatening
Mustard SeedsÂ
Component of condiment causes severe gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea)
Nicotine
Hyperexcitability, depression, vomiting, paralysis, and death
Salt and Salty Snacks
Excessive thirst and urination, sodium ion poisoning, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures and death
Tomatoes
Hyper salivation, loss of appetite, severe gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, drowsiness, central nervous system depression, confusion, behavioral changes, weakness , dilated pupils, slow heart rate
