Mastering Loose Leash Walking

Loose Leash walking is something so many owners struggle with. Many assume when they adopt a new dog they should just know how to walk on a leash. This is not the case. Loose leash walking takes time, patience and consistency. Below I share how I train my clients to loose leash with their dogs. If you still have questions or want an in person training session contact me today and we can set up a session to work together. This is the beginning of mastering Loose Leash Walking.

Mastering Loose Leash Walking

Start from the Beginning

Start with a standard 6ft flat leash (NO RETRACTABLES) and a harness (Front or Back Clip)  or collar. Also have treats in a pouch or pocket.

Calmly hook up your dog to the collar or harness.

Stay inside. Use an open room with limited to no sounds to start. Just stand there. DO NOT MOVE.

When your dog is loose on the leash, mark with yes and treat next to your legs at their level. Do not throw away from you, in the air or treat above their head. We want them to be rewarded by your leg. Repeat this step for 2-5 minutes. (You can also reward when they look at you, sniff but still have loose leash)

Take 1-3 steps in any direction. When your dog walks with you on a loose leash. Mark and reward by your leg. Repeat 2-5 minutes.

Teach a “With Me”. Start walking in one direction for 2-5 steps then turn in another direction. If your dog turns and walks with you, mark and reward by knee. If they do not, add slight leash pressure to the leash and when your dog starts to walk in your direction, mark and reward by knee. Repeat 2-5 minutes.

Mastering Loose Leash Walking

Continue the above in new rooms, your back yard, front yard and driveway to start. When you have your dog’s attention 100% and loose leash, move to a more public place and start from step 1.

Mastering Loose Leash walking requires you have to go at your dog’s pace and do not rush them. Reward behaviors you want in this case, loose leash and calm body language.
