Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement refers to the introduction of a desirable or pleasant stimulus after a behavior. The desirable stimulus reinforces the behavior making it likely to occur again. When training your dog with any method make sure to check out the Do’s and Don’t of Positive Reinforcement.

Positive Reinforcement

Do’s

Immediately Praise and Reward Desired Behavior – dogs live in the moment and do what works for them if you do not immediately mark and praise/reward they will not listen to you

Keep it Short and Fun – the goal is to realize good things come when they listen to you. Make training sessions short and fun. Always end on a good note.

Gamble Treats –  in the beginning always treat then start to vary when and how much you treat, Like gambling.

Positive Reinforcement

Don’t

Make things Complicated –  Cues should be simple and one word. Be specific and simple

Show Inconsistency – if they are not allowed on the couch then they are NEVER around on the couch. This will cause confusion so make sure you stick to your boundaries.
Stop correcting your dog – you can say no and redirect

Tools

Tools you use for training vary on the dog and the desired behaviors. Below are a few linked that I use.
