As we approach the fourth of July it is important for dog owners to make sure they are prepared for these nights. Your dogs may become stressed and anxious during these times. Take into consideration the below tips and tricks for Fireworks.
Decrease Owner Anxiety.
Your dog should have a collar, ID tags and microchip.
Preparation
Spend plenty of time with them prior to the fireworks going off. Take them for a nice long walk, play ball, maybe do some basic training.
Allow plenty of time to pee and poop prior to the darkness to avoid a nervous non productive potty walk.
Cuddle Time:
You can cuddle your pet when they are anxious or nervous but do not over do it. Try to remain calm and they will feed off that before .
Food:
Try feeding earlier so you can adjust your potty time as well
Using enrichment is a great way to engage your dog and help reduce anxiety
It also makes a positive association with the noises.
Natural Remedies:
Using CBD oil may help reduce anxiety and help manage the stress
Thunder shirts are great for some dogs to help manage anxiety
Desensitization to Firework noises :
Retraining your dog so they are relaxed during thunderstorms or fireworks. I recommend Victoria Stillwell’s Canine Noise Phobia series
Keep your Dogs Inside:
Even if they love being outside, bring them in when fireworks are going to go off.
Provide a safe quiet space with comfort toys and blankets.
