I sleep in bed with my dog, and I’m a professional dog trainer. I also advise my clients that this alone is not the route cause of your dog’s behavior issues. It may be a contributing factor but not the main cause of the behavior. The main behaviors associated with sharing the bed with your dog may be resource guarding and separation anxiety. The ultimate question is should your dog sleep in your bed?
Do they respect Boundaries?
Can you tell your dog to get “Off” the bed, and they actually stay off. If they do, they are respecting your boundaries. They should also be invited up on the bed not just jump up if they do not know the Off cue.
Crates
It is highly recommended to crate your puppy or new dog for 1-2 years at a minimum. This will help create a safe space for your dog as well as create structure for your dog. It also helps with potty training and safe containment when you cannot watch them .
Pros
Reduces depression
Increases sense of security
Decrease loneliness
Reduces stress
Cons
Can disturb sleep
May cause separation anxiety but not always
If there are any signs of aggression or guarding then no sleeping in the bed together.
