Living with a fearful dog can be difficult. With the right tools and support you and your dog can live their best life. The best first step is to acknowledge that you have a fearful dog. Keep reading to learn how to live with a fearful dog.
Keep the dog and others safe
Dogs who continue to be exposed to Scary Things can become desperate enough to bite. This may lead to trauma in both humans and dogs. DO NOT take chances trying to keep them feeling safe.Â
Go at the dogs pace for interactions and exposure
Start off with short trips to new places. Bring high value treats and keep it in your dog’s threshold. Remember do not push.Â
Give them something to do
Some great things for them to do are a lick mat, chew, or a Kong.Â
Give them an alternative behavior you want them to do. Examples are place, sit, down, and even a trick.
Desensitization to his new world and your normal
Accept your dog for who they are and learn to be the best handler and advocate for them. This means just because you want to go to the dog park to socialize your dog may not, accept that and go alone. Work on small steps of desensitizing verses giant leaps.
Living with a fearful dog does not mean you are limited to your home or solo activities. Many owners struggle with fearful dogs and by desensitizing them at their pace and hiring a trainer to help them are great ways to help your dog. Also not not every dog wants to be around a bunch of dogs all the time or at all. That is OK, embrace your dog for who they are as an individual.
