Dogs that fall under the Bully Breed label have vastly different looks, temperament and breed histories. Also it is important to note not all have the word “bull” in their names. The main commonality these bully breeds have is that they descend from Molosser dogs. These are large, muscular dogs who originated in Greece and have pendant ears and short muzzles. It is important to know that Bully Breeds are not in fact Bullies and most that fall under this label have better temperaments than Chihuahua. So, What is a Bully Breed?
What Breeds are Considered Bully Breeds?
Dogs who are commonly in the bully breed group are American Pitbull Terriers, English Bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs, Cane Corso, Great Dane, Rottweiler and bull terriers.
Creation
These dogs were created to help protect livestock, guard property and help with day-to-day work. Unfortunately they are mainly known for their involvement in blood sports such as bull and bear baiting. Bully Breeds are generally not aggressive when they are in a proper home and properly socialized.
Why Do We Call Them Bully Dogs?
Many people think that Bully Breeds are standoffish, cruel or aggressive dogs, but that is not the case. Unfortunately due to fear based bully bans and laws these breeds are harder to home in condos and housing neighborhoods.
