There are many reasons to leash your dog but I wanted to share a few. In reality there is no reason to have your dog off leash in most cases unless you are participating in a sport or in an enclosed area. These are in no order and are all equally important when considering leashing your dog. It is important to note most communities require dogs to be on leash and this is for the health and safety of the public and your pet.
Neighborhood Policy & Law
It’s just that simple. Respect your neighbors and their property by keeping your dog near you and in control. If you really need to give your dog space (more than 6 ft) away from you I recommend getting a long line. This tool allows your dog to explore but with the safety of being attached to you.
Improved companionship & Positive reflection on the Owner
Enjoy your walks with your dog and stop worrying about dangers. If your dog is off leash they are more likely to get hit by a car, run off, kill wildlife or get into a fight with a dog or human. A well mannered dog is also a great reflection on their owner.
Prevent Spread of Disease and Endangerment
This one should be common sense but sometimes it is not. Keep dogs away from others fecal matter to avoid contracting Parvo or Distemper.
Makes moving and changes in life easier
Having a leash trained dog makes visits with vets and groomers easier for all involved. From working with many dogs in boarding situations, I have seen dogs react bad to leashes. This causes issues for the boarding facilities when they have to safely handle those dogs.
