We now live in an increasingly dog friendly society where bringing your dog everywhere is the new normal. However, when a dog is allowed somewhere it is commonly suggested the dog is well behaved. There are some key skills you can teach your dog to be able to bring them into these dog friendly sanctioned areas. Go More Places with your Dog.
Leave it
This is a crucial cue to know as when you take your dog to highly populated areas there is bound to be trash, moldy food and other dangerous stuff your dog needs to avoid ingesting. Check out this video on how to teach a leave it.
Loose Leash Walking
Having a loose leash walking dog is key when in high distraction areas for safety of the dog and others around you. This may take some time to master but it’s possible.
“Go say hi”
This cue is used for a safe and controlled greeting of dogs and humans. Have your dog in a sit and then when both people and dog are calm allow them to go say hi for a few seconds then call off to avoid conflict. Make sure both parties in the greeting are under control and calm to ensure a proper greeting. Avoid sticking your hand out to a dog and simple stand still and let them sniff you without your hand just out there.
Settle on a Mat
This just teaches your dog to settle on a mat while in public. To avoid any distractions that may occur. This is taught similar to a place cue. I always recommend using a portable mat, bed, blanket or towel to keep it familiar. This also sets your dog up for success.
