The Truth About Bully Breeds

A term used to identify a variety of terrier-type dogs such as American Pitbull terriers, Bull terriers, Bullmastiffs, Staffordshire terriers, Boston terriers, Boxers and French Bulldogs. Often dogs who physically resemble terriers are labeled as Bully Breeds Despite having no genetic relationship to these breeds of dogs. Keep reading to learn the truth about bully breeds.

The term “Bully Breed” itself has nothing to do with the dogs temperament or behavior. It actually has everything to do with their origin and history. The original combination was Bulldogs and British terriers. This combination is the muscle power and tenacity of the bulldog with the terriers alertness, agility and speed.

Loving and Affectionate toward People 

Athletic, Agile, Gentle (Great for Dog Sports) 

Higher Prey Drive (fast moving objects may trigger) 

Common Myths & Misconceptions

Lock Jaw : Not a thing, anatomy is the same as any other dog 

Naturally Aggressive: Behavior is influenced by the interaction between a dog’s genetic make-up and the environment. Breed alone does not shape behavior. Socialization, training and management have a strong influence on a dog’s behavior. 

Bad with Children: False, they have a great temperament to be around children. 

Bite Pressure: Pitbull’s have a bite pressure of 235lbs which is less than the average 320lb pressure of a normal dog. 

Most Likely to Bite: False, 86.6% of American Pitbull Terriers passed their test for stability and friendliness.

  1. Folks want to hear the gory, bad news. I adopted a ‘hard case’ Bull on death row. I had no idea what to expect. No experience with dogs this powerful.
