The Wait Cue is the shorter version of a stay and also when a release word is taught from the start.
This cue can be used when entering or exiting the car, your house, a store, or thresholds and at meal times as they wait for their bowl to be put down..
This cue teaches impulse control to dogs.
How to Teach:
Ask your dog to sit (they can stand or down as well) – mark and reward
Hold one finger up and say “wait” and take a step towards the door
If they move, reset them and try again
If they stay in that position then release them (Break, Free, Release, etc)
Repeat 3-5 times going in and out of doors to start then apply to cars, gates, crossing the street and more
