This is not a relevant behavior for your dog to learn. You can also capture the behavior when they offer it on their own. Many dogs struggle with this behavior and that’s normal. Be patient and consistent with them. Teaching down should not consume you.
Sit to Down
- Place a treat on your dog’s nose
- Slowly move your hand toward the floor until your dog has laid down flat (chest to floor). You may have to hold it on the floor for a few moments. You can also take the treat to their nose and push it down and back towards their paws.
- Use your bridge word (yes) when they are lying flat and reward
Under the Knee Method.
- Take a treat in your hand and lure your dog to go under your knee
- Once they do, make them hold that position. In most cases, the dog will give in and lay down. When they do, mark with “Yes” and reward.
- Release the dog from the position and repeat a few times each session.
