Socialization and Puppies, what is too early?

Hey Dog Lovers,

Today we talk about when to start socialization for your new puppy and to be honest there is so many different opinions on this it is hard to know what is right or wrong. This is just my opinion and as always I am not a medical professional.

All dogs need some form of socialization, whether that is socialization in small groups or doggy daycare, exposure to other dogs is crucial.

Puppy Socialization:

In the best situation, socialization starts from birth

Never too early to socialize your puppy inside your home

New research has changed standard veterinary recommendations regarding when to start puppy socialization

Never take your puppy to the dog park before he has received all of his vaccines

Earliest Socialization

12-13 week socialization period is crucial

If you got your puppy from a good breeder they have been socialized from day one with their litter mates and parents

If you got your puppy from a backyard breeder or pet store they most likely did not get the proper socialization from their litter mates or parents

If you get your puppy from a shelter, they may or may not have gotten that socialization from litter mates

From the moment the puppy comes home:

Socialize your puppy from the moment they come into your home

Start off slowly in those first couple days after getting Fido Home

Gradually increase the duration and breadth of socialization as he becomes more comfortable with you

In and around your house

Expose to vacuums, cleaners, hats, doorbells, ground , sounds

Out and About

After 17 weeks of vaccinations to build up thier immune system

Vets have stated earlier the better for socialization with their first round of shots and in a controlled environment.

Puppy classes are a safe place to socialize with diseases
