Considering a New Dog

There are many factors that need to be considered when getting a new dog. If your home already has another dog make sure to evaluate if a new dog is a good idea. Make sure to importance questions and do your research with the rescue or shelter you are adopting from. Temperament plays a huge role when choosing a new family member. Also consider lifestyle and age.   The original dog in the house should have their own space the new one cannot access at least for now. This will establish safety and a place for them to relax. Make sure to also provide a space for the new dog as they adjust.

Getting a New Dog?

Behaviors to start once you have a new dog in the home: Place, Sit, Wait, Potty training, Crate Training and Off. With Clear consistent communication you can shape your new dog to be their best selves.

Using a play pen for puppy and smaller dogs will help with the phase of your dog getting use to their new best friend.

Training sessions should be short and fun. Also having individual vs group training is also key. This is to make sure your new dog is getting the proper attention to the training. Spend time both apart and together with your dogs.

  1. Really wish I’d considered these things when we brought Diggy home. 12 years later and she and Scout still don’t like each other. At this point, I’m just grateful for their long lives.
