As a dog trainer and a dog owner I am not a fan of the electric fences. Although they may be the more cost effective option to a standard fence they do not offer the same security and safety as a standard fence. Keep reading to discover my opinions on the Electric Fence as a professional dog trainer.
Cost of Electric Fences
The only part I may slightly understand is the cost compared to a normal fence install but I still push for normal fencing over electric fence. Not only have I seen dogs with my own eyes break the fence and not want to return but also seen dogs terrified of going outside for simple fear or being shocked. This is my personal opinion of Electric Fences.
E-Collar in Disguises?
As a predominant positive reinforcement trainer I do not see a huge difference in electric fences and the e collars. I would prefer a dog on an e-collar then an electric fence collar. They have the same correction, just one is used for the yard and the other is for behavior training. Owners seem so against E-collar training but in reality when they have an electric fence they sound a little naïve.
Risks of Electric Fences
Not only does it have the potential to shock a dog but it has other risks as well. Some dogs will learn to put up with a brief shock if that means freedom. Doesn’t stop other animals/ people from coming into your yard. It actually taunts your dog as they can only chase so far without getting shocked.
Maintenance
The maintenance of charging the collar and making sure the fence doesn’t surge or go out is also a huge red flag for me.
My Recommendation for Electric Fences
When I talk to owners I 100% recommend a standard 6ft fence or a long line if they cannot afford or do not want a fence. I never recommend Electric fences and never will.
